Closed-Loop Real-Time HIL Simulation Setup: By Use of IEC 61850 Standard
This course begins by an online lecture that elaborates the use of communication protocols, in particular those defined by the IEC 61850 Standard, to set up a closed loop real-time hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment. Not available at the moment, the course is intended to continue by remote access to our RT-HIL simulation facility where the course participants attain hands-on experience configuring real-time simulators as well as protection relays from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to act as IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled-Values publisher and subscriber. If you are interested to participate in our hands-on training sessions, please sign up below.

Anyone who is familiar with fundamentals of RT-HIL simulation and would like to learn setting up a closed loop RT-HIL simulation environment by use of IEC 61850 Standard!
The RT-HIL Academy course on “Real-Time Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation: Fundamentals & Popular Platforms” is a highly recommended prerequisite for this course.
Upon completion of the course, you will:
- Gain basic understanding to set up an RT-HIL simulation environment by use of communication protocols
- Become familiar with IEC61850 GOOSE and Sampled-Value communication protocols, and their implementations in RTDS and OPAL-RT simulators
- Become familiar with Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) protection relays
- Gain hands-on experience setting up a closed-loop RT-HIL simulation environment with RTDS or OPAL-RT simulator and SEL relays
- A quick recap of the concept of real-time hardware-in-loop (RT-HIL) simulation
- Use of communication protocols to set up an RT-HIL simulation environment
- What is a communication protocol?
- What is IEC 61850 standard?
- Introduction to IEC 61850 GOOSE protocol
- Introduction to IEC 61850 Sampled-Values protocol
- How to set up a closed-loop RT-HIL simulation environment using IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled-Values protocols
- Hands-on training
Upon successful completion of the course, you will earn an RT-HIL Academy Certificate of Completion; a proof that you have knowledge and hands-on experience setting up a closed loop RT-HIL simulation environment by use of IEC 61850 Standard.
In order to take the course hands-on training session, you would need:
- A desktop or a laptop computer.
- An Internet connection.
- A Google account. If you don’t have one, please sign up for free at the Google Account webpage.
- An instance of the Chrome browser installed on your desktop or laptop computer. You can download the Chrome browser for free from the Google Chrome webpage.

Hands-on Training Session
We, at RT-HIL Academy, are setting up a platform for remote access to our RT-HIL simulation facility, where the course participants attain hands-on experience configuring real-time simulators as well as protection relays from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) to act as IEC 61850 GOOSE and Sampled-Values publisher and subscriber. If you are interested, please sign up below to receive a notification once our platform is launched. Please note that this service will be offered for a fee.
